University of Chicago free essay sample
Each year, University of Chicago hosts a hunt; a one-of-a-kind only competition that asks college students to find over three hundred items in little more than half of a week. Although most schools make analogous demands on a day-by-day basis, University of Chicagoââ¬â¢s stands out in that its list is not an index of textbooks. Its list is not a rubric. Its list is the ââ¬Å"Scav Hunt.â⬠As part of the hunt, U of C asks students scour the streets for a list of notoriously arbitrary items. Most recently, it has called for both sentient and slain bodily organs (#8 and #267, respectively); a forthcoming monarch (#66), and cowboy attire that is both vegan and vagabond friendly (#77). Just as U of C asks its students and faculty to push beyond the boundaries of intellectual impossibility, the competition asks teams to find the impossibleââ¬âand just as Enrico Fermiââ¬â¢s ambitions fashioned the first artificial nuclear reaction, students return to campus in cars brimming with umbilical cords, elephants, and bee beards. [20 points] 10. _____ Mock Trial, Student Government, and Students for a Democratic Society. [10 points] Although I have kept the University of Chicago at the back of my mind since the seventh grade, it wasnââ¬â¢t until this summer that the college became my top choice. As I began to pursue an overwhelming assortment of college guidebooks, I discovered a shocking disparity. Despite all that each institution claimed to offer, none but U of C could offer me what I wanted in a collegeââ¬âconcentration; a challenging core; a clever community. None but U of C could bring me that intellectual and interactional fulfillment that I have always longed for. None could even offer me the opportunity to write thisââ¬âan essay based wholly off of a whimsical scavenger hunt.

The History of Juneteenth Celebrations
The History of Juneteenth Celebrations Abolitionists such as Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth worked tirelessly to free blacks from bondage in the United States. And when President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863, it appeared that the peculiar institution known as slavery had met its end. For many African Americans, life remained the same, however. Thatââ¬â¢s because fierce racial discrimination prevented them from living autonomous lives. More shockingly, some enslaved African Americans had no idea that President Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which mandated that they be set free. In Texas, more than two-and-a-half years passed before slaves received their freedom. The holiday known as Juneteenth Independence Day honors these slaves as well as African-American heritage and the contributions blacks have made to the United States. History of Juneteenth Juneteenth marks the date of June 19, 1865, when Gen. Gordon Granger of the Union Army arrived in Galveston, Texas, to demand that the slaves there be set free. Texas was one of the last states where slavery endured. Although President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, African Americans remained in bondage in the Lone Star State. When Gen. Granger arrived in Texas, he read General Order No. 3 to Galveston residents: ââ¬Å"The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages.â⬠Following Grangerââ¬â¢s announcement, the formerly enslaved African Americans broke into celebration. Today that celebration, said to be the oldest black American holiday, is known as Juneteenth. African Americans not only celebrated their freedom, they exercised their new rights by buying land across Texas, namely Emancipation Park in Houston, Booker T. Washington Park in Mexia and Emancipation Park in Austin. Past and Present Juneteenth Celebrations The first massive Juneteenth celebrations kicked off the year after Gen. Granger appeared in Galveston. Historic Juneteenth celebrations included religious services, readings of the Emancipation Proclamation, inspirational speakers, stories from former slaves and games and contests, including rodeo events. Many African Americans celebrated Juneteenth in the same way that Americans generally celebrate the Fourth of July. Today, Juneteenth celebrations feature similar activities. As of 2012, 40 states and the District of Columbia recognize the Juneteenth holiday. Since 1980, the state of Texas has observed Juneteenth as an official holiday known as Emancipation Day. Contemporary celebrations of Juneteenth in Texas and elsewhere include parades and street fairs, dancing, picnics and cookouts, family reunions and historical reenactments. Moreover, President Barack Obama pointed out in his 2009 proclamation of the holiday that Juneteenth ââ¬Å"also serves as a time for reflection and appreciation, and an opportunity for many people to trace their familyââ¬â¢s lineage.â⬠While African Americans widely celebrate Juneteenth today, the popularity of the holiday has waned during certain periods, such as World War II. Holiday celebrations of Juneteenth resurrected in 1950, but by the last years of that decade and in the 1960s, Juneteenth celebrations declined once more. Juneteenth became a popular holiday again in a variety of regions during the 1970s. In the early 21st century, Juneteenth is not only a well celebrated holiday, thereââ¬â¢s a push to have the 19th of June become a National Day of Recognition for slavery. Call for National Day of Recognition The Rev. Ronald V. Myers Sr., founder and chairman of the National Juneteenth Holiday Campaign and the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation, has asked President Barack Obama to ââ¬Å"issue a presidential proclamation to establish Juneteenth Independence Day as a National Day of Observance in America, similar to Flag Day or Patriot Day.â⬠As an elected official in Illinois, Barack Obama supported legislation for his state to recognize Juneteenth, but the president has yet to make a move that would make Juneteenth a National Day of Recognition. Only time will tell if Juneteenth and the slavery of African Americans is ever acknowledged by the federal government in such an official capacity.

Inverted Pyramid Method of Organization in Newswriting
Inverted Pyramid Method of Organization in Newswriting The inverted pyramid became a standard form in American newspapers early in the 20th century, and variations on the form remain common today in news stories, press releases, short research reports, articles, and other forms of expository writing. It is a method of organization in which facts are presented in descending order of importance. Examples of Inverted Pyramid Composition The concept behind the inverted pyramid format is relatively simple. The writer prioritizes the factual information to be conveyed in the news story by importance. The most essential pieces of information are offered in the first line, which is called the lead (or summary lead). This usually addresses the so-called five Ws (who, what, when, why, and where). Thus, the reader is able to ascertain the key elements of the story immediately. The writer then provides the rest of the information and supporting contextual details in descending order of importance, leaving the least essential material for the very end. This gives the completed story the form of an inverted pyramid, with the most important elements, or the base of the story, on top. Opening With the Climax If the essence of the story is its climax, then a proper inverted pyramid places the storys climax in the lead or opening sentence. The most important elements of a well-written news article thus appear in the lead, the very first sentence of the story. Cutting From the Bottom The inverted pyramid style in newspaper writing was developed because editors, adjusting for space, would cut the article from the bottom. We can write the same way in a magazine article. . . .We add details as we enlarge the article. So the weight is like an inverted pyramid, with the details of lesser importance at the end of the article. For example, if I write, Two children were injured when fire swept through the First Community Church, Detroit, Michigan, on May 10. The fire is believed to have started from unattended candles. Thats complete, but a lot of details can be added in succeeding paragraphs. If space is tight, an editor can cut from the bottom and still save the essential elements. Using the Inverted Pyramid in Online Writing The inverted pyramid structure, typically used in newspaper writing, is also appropriate for long narrative text in online technical documents. Use this structure to organize paragraphs and sentences within a section of narrative text. To create an inverted pyramid structure, follow these guidelines: Use clear, meaningful headings or lists at the beginning of a topic.Create separate paragraphs or topics to emphasize important points.Do not bury your main point in the middle of a paragraph or topic. Family on Film Movie Review Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Family on Film - Movie Review Example Atticus is a lawyer who does not bend his ideals and principles. Though everyone was discouraging him to defend a black manââ¬âbecause he is already guilty by the mere color of his skin, he was determined to prove the innocence of Tom. Although it was a very unpopular decision, a white man defending a black man accused of raping a white woman, Atticus stuck by his principles; undeterred by the social pressures caused by his unpopular decision. Although he successfully defended Tom and proved his innocence yet lost the case, his social defiance sent a very powerful message to his children. Unlike Atticus, Antonio of ââ¬Å"The Bicycle Thiefâ⬠was someone who wanted to stay true to his principles but failed to do so due to social pressures. Like Atticus and all decent fathers, Antonio also wanted to provide for his family to the best of his capacity. That is why the bicycle is symbolic in so many waysââ¬âincome, dreams, hope, escape, and security among others. But because Antonio was hard-pressed in all possible ways, he no longer could stand-by his morals. In the end, he opted to steal a bike, and ended up embarrassing himself not just in front of the whole community, but in front of his son.

Role of the US Financial System Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Role of the US Financial System - Essay Example The financial system consists of two types of markets: the money markets and the capital market. The money markets are financial assets with a maturity date of one year or less. The most influential of all money market instruments which provides liquidity to the system are treasury bills. Treasury bill are 90 day maturity short term bills which pay the investors a modest interest rate for of approximately 4-5% for borrowing money to the government (Jsj, 2007).. The government along with the federally issued T-bill also sales other types of financial instruments in the money and capital markets. The government sells a lot of government bonds in order to finance governmental expenses such as making infrastructure improvements, capital projects, and cover emergency expenses among other uses. Bonds are sold by the federal, state, municipal government, and state agencies to acquire funds to finance their operations. The capital market takes place in stock exchanges around the world. The United States has many stock exchanges including the world most powerful exchange called the New York Stock Exchange. Another powerful exchange is the over the counter market of NASDAQ. In the stock market industry there have been a lot of mergers between international exchanges joining forces to gain power. In the floor of the stock exchange the brokers make purchases and sales of common stock, preferred stocks, futures, options, bonds among other types of financial instruments immediately after a client places an order. The stock market and the exchanges in which activity takes place are an economic market structure that is considered a perfect competition. In a perfectly competitive market the market reacts to new information immediately and

Coursework in Arts Essay Example for Free
Coursework in Arts Essay 1. In Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrunââ¬â¢s painting of the Queen of France, Marie-Antoinette, in the late 18th century, the queen is shown sitting with her three children in a formal gown at the edge of the Hall of Mirrors. Colors that were used can be described as basically feminineââ¬âshades of ruby, cherry, velvet, scarlet, and salmon; yet darker colors were used in the crib of the eldest son to portray his death. From the colors of the painting, the queen appears to be sitting on a shiny spot, but around her is a darker, gloomier color that may portray danger to her and her children. Textures, on the other hand, appear to be soft and feathery, which shows wealth and comfort. The lines in the background are parallel and horizontal, which points to her straight, firm position in her seat. The position of the queen and her two children beside her form a straight cross beside the crib that looks like a cave. The eldest son alive who points to the crib may appear like the angel beside the cave where Jesus was buried. The son was like saying, ââ¬ËYouââ¬â¢re looking for my brother? Heââ¬â¢s not here anymore but has gone up to the Father. ââ¬â¢ On the other hand, the eldest son alive stands firmly alone, which shows independence and strengthâ⬠¦even at an early age. The stairs in the background may mean political fame, but it was portrayed to be darker and more shadowy above, so that it would be best for the queen to be where she isââ¬âwith her children and her home (please see painting in the appendix). Formal elements show that this good queen is a devoted motherââ¬âfull of quiet dignityââ¬âby the way the colors, the textures, the lines, the shapes, and the space interact with one another. The whole scene portrays quietness, peacefulness, as well as acceptanceââ¬âthings that picture her as a good and pleasant being. There is also the hint of wealth and extravagance, especially the portrayal of the Hall of Mirrors. In the overall, the painting is meant to give her a positive, submissive, and motherly aura. 2. John Singleton Copleyââ¬â¢s painting of Paul Revere in 1768 is an example of a Rococo painting. The Rococo style, which emerged in France, characterizes opulence, grace, and lightness, as seen in the painting (Figure 2 in the appendix). Copley used contrasting colors like black (as the background) and white (as Revereââ¬â¢s shirt) to put more emphasis on the main object. The lines, colors, and objects are all simple. Lines, especially in the head and in the table, are all parallel, which may point to neutralism and evenhandedness. It was said that Revere was ââ¬Å"uninterested in politics; he wanted only to be neutral, which was not possibleâ⬠(Artchive, 2007). The eyes, on the other hand, portray innocence, knowledge, and fairness. The textures used are all smooth and shiny, which may also reflect opulence. It focuses on ââ¬Ëcarefree aristocratic lifeââ¬â¢, with direct reference on Revereââ¬â¢s being a silversmithââ¬âwith a piece of silverware on his hand. He was portrayed with such extravagance, as shown in the linen cloth, which at that time was not yet available in America and could only be imported to the landâ⬠¦ as well as the golden buttons that lay on his vest. However, the portrayal of ââ¬Ëflowing linenââ¬â¢ could pointââ¬ânot to the linens of Englandââ¬âbut to the production of a hundred ells of linen in America during that time, which for Revere was something to be proud of. However, it is said that the painting is a sort of a ââ¬Ëbalancing actââ¬â¢ conducted by painter Copley (Artchive, 2007), especially that he is about to marry one of the Clarkes who were owners of ââ¬Å"the notorious tea concessionâ⬠(Artchive, 2007). The silver teapot appears to be a large issue then, since only their enemiesââ¬âthe Toriesââ¬âdrank tea (the Whigs drank the Boston tea, which was a punch). Revere is shown as a neutral person who wears rich linen clothing, but which comes from his own land. He is holding a silverware teapot, which is one of his expertise, but points to the character of the enemies and to the business of the Clarkes with which Copley is about to share his life with. Therefore, Revere is neutral, as he is open to all.

Canterbury Tales Comparison :: essays papers
Canterbury Tales Comparison "If gold rusts, what shall iron do" (502)? This question seems to be the basis of the comparison between the parson and the reeve. One, a good man on the inside and out, the other, a wonderful fascade to hide his true personality. Althgough completely different, one tries to imitate the other to make himself appear a good man. The parson embodied what a preacher of the Lord should be. He was honest, kind, truthful, "benign, and wonderfully diligent" (485). Although he was a righteous man eh did not belittle or condemn those who were not as holy as he was. However he woudl highly scold those who were "obstinate" (523). He was a man who practied what he preached and led people not by his words, but his good actions. He would even give the poor parishoners some of his own moeney and possessions. He felt that it was imporrible "to find a filthy shepherd and a clean sheep" (506) and that if he was a priest (a man who is closer to God than most) is corrupt, then how could he expect his parishoners to be honest? There is no counter representation for the parson because with all of the good deeds he has done for others, when Chaucer says he believes "there is not better priest anywhere" (526) he believes it to be true, and so does the reader. The reeve was a thin, "choleric" (589) man. He was very clever and wilely, and could not be tricked by other. He was very knowledgable about about predicting what the yeild of his crops would be. Most people were afraid of him and he had a plesant home in a meadow. It would seem that he would have a sort of unhappy dreary home, but that was not the case. A lot of his master's properties were under his control and power, and he tricked his lorfd into getting most things. He would lend and sell the lords own properties back to him, and he privately had more riches than his lord. He also learned the trade of being a craftsman and a carpenter at a young age. However wicked the reeve may be on the inside, he tries to make others see him as a good man.

Travel from the ancient time has held a fascination for mankind . The urge to explore new places and seek a change of environment is not new. In all the epics whether it is ââ¬Å"The Ramayanaââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ or ââ¬Å"The Mahabharataâ⬠or ââ¬Å"The Bibleâ⬠every where travel has been mentioned. nly reasons were different. Somewhere travel was to escape from one to another because of cruel king and somewhere it was because of parentââ¬â¢s order or a condition in gambling . But there is no doubt that rapid development in the means of transport and communication has made the whole world practically one neighborhood and has made travel an easy affair. ââ¬Å"Tourism is fourth Extension of Modern Economicsâ⬠Frayad According to a study Conducted by the Wharton Econometric Forecasting Associates (WEFA group ) on behalf of the American Express Travel Related service company ââ¬Å"Travel and Tourism is the largest industry in the world in terms of employment in almost every country of the worldâ⬠The study further points out that ââ¬Å"Travel and tourism employment investment output and value added exceed those of such major industries as steel automobiles textiles and electronic in Virtually every countryâ⬠The estimates about tourist says that the numbers of tourist leaving their homes is 694 millions in 2001 and this number likely to swell to 1600 millions by 2020 and the receipts from it are estimated to Cross $ 2000 billion. One of the leading futurologists in the world Hermann Khan Predicting a golden era for tourism says ââ¬Å"In sum I see a very bright future ahead for tourism and travel industry. There are clouds on the horizon to be sure but â⬠¦.. it will become a larger giant than it already is in the next 50years. Today the benefits of tourism are not to be judged in terms of economic enefits alone Tourism has wider implications encompassing not only economic benefits but also social and cultural benefits as well. From the social and cultural point of view there is enough evidence to support the fact that tourism and travel unquestionably produces an interaction between the cultural customs of the visitors and those of the host population. Cultural tourism is a fertile g round for exercising creative talents, festering special kinds of relations between the visitors and the host population between the tourists and the host environment. The economic benefits to a country by way which of earning foreign exchange on the other hand are however the prime motive for various nation to promote tourism Those responsible for managing the affairs of nations have almost universally recognized the economic advantages of tourism . Tourism is an important sources for maximizing scare foreign exchange earning for not only the developing countries but of many developed countries of the world as well. In short the tourism phenomenon has attracted almost the entire world. Those responsible for managing the affairs of nations have almost universally recognized the economic advantages of tourism . Besides economic benefits to a country by way of earning foreign exchange and employment generations. Tourism also makes a tremendous contribution to the improvement of social and cultural trends of the country. Tourism emerged as the largest global industry of the 20th century. In the new millennium global economy will be governed by technology, telecommunication and tourism. Tourism has potentials to create the maximum numbers of jobs. According to an assessment, in India alone 100 million additional jobs will be created by the tourism industry in the next 25 years. It helps to earn valuable foreign exchange also. We should always remembered that development does not mean increase in GDP and GNP alone. It must add to prosperity and happiness. An important feature of the tourism industry is its contribution to the National integration and creation of harmonious social and cultural environment. It also encourages respect for preservation of Monuments and Heritage properties. It should help the promotion of arts, crafts, culture and bring a prosperity and sustainable development. Thus contribute to the creations of prosperous, healthy and peaceful world. By 2020, tourism is poised to be the single most important influence on global trade and commerce. Tourism is an economic activity and every activity depends on demand. Tourism also creates demand from its activities and we cannot ignore its importance in economical growth. Tourism is related with many industries also. Tourism plays an important role in enhancing jobs opportunity. According to Jag Mohan, ex- tourism ministers of India ââ¬ËOn 10 lakh investment only 12 persons can be employed in any industry, but tourism industry can employ 47 persons on the same investment. â⬠It is also believed that in INDIA only tourism is providing direct job opportunity to 93 lakh persons. The activities involved in travel and tourism industries are accommodation, transportation, restaurant entertainment and other services related with travel. The effect of improvement in travel and tourism is on travel and tour economy and hence whole economy. One more important fact that more employment opportunity can be speedily generated on lower costs. These opportunities are at small industries and local community level. These years there is tremendous like in tourism of all over the world. Even tourism has got the status of largest export industry of the world. There are only 16,800 foreign tourists in INDIA in 1951, which has increased to 1. 7 million in 1990 and further increased to 2. 75 million in 2003. The growth rate of tourism between 1990 to 2000 was 4. 46 percent annually. The growth rate achieved in year 2000 was much more than that of previous year. But if compare it with respect to tourist arrival, than share of India in world is constant at 0. 38 percent from 1995. In south Asia India has share of 42 percent of foreign touristââ¬â¢s arrival in year 2000. It means that tourism growth rate of INDIA is 4. 7 percent as compare to 3. 2 percent average growth rate of the world in the time span of 1995-2000. But the Indian tourism growth rate of 5. 3 percent in 2000 was very little with compare to our neighboring countries like China (15%) , Hong Kong (10. 7%), Malaysia (27%), Thailand (12. 5%) , Makau (25%), Iran (28. %) . NATURE OF TOURISM : The term ââ¬Ëtourism is used to describe the temporary short ââ¬âterm movement of people to destinations out side the places where they normally live and work. The word ââ¬ËTOURââ¬â¢ has its origin from the Latin term ââ¬ËTORNUSââ¬â¢ which means lathe or wheel. The full turn of the wheel or lathe forms a circle or a circuit lust like this tour involves the process of a jou rney in which one returns to the starting point. The word ââ¬Ëtourââ¬â¢ it is noted was first used to refer a journey in which one travels and visits a number of places in a circuit. A tourists leaves home to get away from routine grind but the end of all is that he is only eager to go back to his sweet homeââ¬â¢ (Robinson, 1976) ââ¬Å"Tourism is travel and visiting places for pleasure often involving sightseeing and staying in overnight accommodation. Regarded as an industry, tourism can increase wealth and jobs opportunities in an area although the work is often seasonal and low paid among the negative effects of tourism are traffic and people congestion as well as damages to the environmentâ⬠(Hutchinson, 2002) Journey effected for pleasure and holiday, health business and trade, pilgrimage and social purposes, studies, training and research, foreign affairs and other similar purposes are covered under tourism. Tourism provides business for travel agents, transporters, hotels, retailed dealers and many others. It is a direct product of technological and scientific progress associated with industrialization ,urbanization and population explosion (Sarngadharan, M 1995) Travel and tourism has come to occupy a Prime position in the global economy. It generates foreign exchange to a considerable extent, boosts the economy and promotes peace and understanding between different countries. Tourism is an industry which has a social phenomenon with economic consequences. It gave a number of social and economic benefits. Leaving about the cultural diversities and lifestyles of different people helped in promoting international brotherhood as the millions who travel all over the world really build up on ethos of integration and relations. It is conglomeration of various industries and related activities forming a single entity and generates employment in a big way. There is no doubt that over the past two decades tourism has become one of the fastest growing industries in the world. For the collection of statistics it is usually necessary to determine a boundary which must be crossed by travellers if they are to be enumerated as tourists. This is frequently though not necessarily an international boundary Motivation to travel is many and varied and complicate the enumeration problems. Business travelers are usually included, while students abroad are excluded from most international tourist statistics. International tourism is dominated by the western world which constitutes both the major source of tourists and the most frequented destination areas (Williams and Zelinsky, 1970) . This feature of tourist flow is largely explained by the relatively high incomes of the western world which permit the luxury of the long distance movement and the availability of efficient transportation and superior accommodations which facilitates travel in comfort. Several developing countries possess the attraction of warm climates, interesting landscapes and cultural and low living expenses. Reduction in the costs of long distance travel has put them within reach of the more prosperous traveler in the western world. The large sums of money involved in international tourism have attracted the attention of many developing countries eager to gain a larger share in the expanding tourist trade. Tourism is seen as a source of income, foreign exchange, jobs and amenities for the resident population (United Nations Conference on Trade & Development, 1973) It may help to diversify economies, provide a stimulus for the development of other industries and contribute to the dispersal of economic activities. However it would be wrong to assume that tourism is a panacea for the economic ills of the developing world. In many cases tourism has been a mixed blessing and economic gains have only been achieved at social and environmental costs. Even the economic benefits have been over estimated. But this is particularly the where development has been based upon foreign capital imported labour and materials, generous tax incentives and expatriated profits. Tourism and recreation must be planned as carefully as any other industry should be minimized if maximum benefits are to accrue to the reception area. In India the travel and tourism industry has really come of age . India being one of the most sought after destination in the world the potential of the industry as a foreign exchange earner is well known. Being an employment ââ¬âOriented and labour ââ¬â intensive industry and set to become number one in the world in these aspects. It provides high growth prospects for specialists. The industry is and has always been a good employer and pay packets are promising. Tourism is accorded the status of industry because investment is required for the infrastructure, it employs labour and profit is recorded. The significant feature of the tourism industry is that it employs a large number of women ââ¬â educated, uneducated, skilled or unskilled, generate employment opportunities particularly to remote and backward areas and also contribute to national integration. Women actually outnumber men in hotels, airline services, travel agencies, handicraft and cultural activities. The tourism industry is a limitless industry with immense growth potential the world over. Tourism has a tremendous positive impact on the economic and social aspects of the host country. To reap the economic and social benefits of tourism countries are vying with each other to woo more international and domestic tourists. India is no exception, though to its achievements are not astonishing. It is very necessary to have a clear concept and more precise definition of tourism for more insight about the tourism. Tourism is a painless procedure for transfer of real resources from industrially capital surplus developed countries to low income developing countries. It is very important source not only maximizing scare foreign exchange earning not only developing countries but many development countries.

Marxism vs Functionalism
As a sociological discipline, functionalism is counterposed to Marxism. However it shares with Marxism the importance of ââ¬Ëtotalityââ¬â¢ and the corresponding view that scientific inquiry is based upon the interdependence of parts within a whole. It is important to distinguish why the Marxian use of the totality differs significantly from functionalist systems. Primarily this involves the Marxian emphasis on the contradictory character of the whole and the treatment of the social totality from the perspective of its conflicts.Functionalism in contrast views society generally as a stable system and looks for the mechanisms that give it harmony ââ¬â it thus seeks to reduce conflict to a residual element of the system, or view conflict from the perspective of its maintenance of the social system. Marxism was founded by Karl Marx. Marx saw society as divided into two major parts, the economic base otherwise known as the infrastructure and the super-structure. Functionalists s ee society as a set of parts which work together to form a whole. Functionalism is also called a consensus theory.Marxism and functionalism are similar in that they see that the way society is structured as an important part in determining the way people have relationships and behave between themselves. This is known as structural perspective. Both functionalists and Marxists believe that people are portrayed as creature within the social system. Functionalists believe that society operates to the benefit of everybody. They stress that societies continue to exist because a lot of the time there is consensus between various aspects.

Modern communication and transportation accelerate mass migrations from one continent to the United States. Ethnic and racial diversity was bound to happen in the American society. As immigration began to explode, a cult of ethnicity erupted both between non-Anglo whites and among nonwhite minorities. Until recently, the only country that has made a multiethnic society work was the United States. Hector St. John de Creve Coeur said, ââ¬Å"In America . . . individuals of all nations are melted into a new race of menâ⬠. Is this still true? The creation of the U.S. was not to preserve old cultures but to forge a new, American culture." (Schlesinger 22). In the 20th century, the melting pot is not working, and the whole idea is under attack. The United States has changed from a melting pot to a vast culture with varying backgrounds. In years before, America was a collection of Chinese, Germans, Italians, Scots, Croats, etc., all craving freedom. Today, even the simple concept of an English-speaking nation is fading off the continent. In the old days, immigrants were taught in English in the public schools. In America today, children are taught in German, Italian, Polish, and 108 other languages. Most of these schools are funded by 139 million federal dollars. Until recently, emigrants in the United States longed for admittance in society's mainstream. Now these groups demand separation from society, to be able to preserve and conserve their customs and languages. The biggest problem with this demand, is whatever accommodation takes place, must be done and accepted by the receiving society (Chavez 60). Causes of Conflict
Scarce resources are very important to the country. It is a source of revenue for the country and it can be sold off for money and as raw resources for industrialization. Thus, countries would want to compete for scarce resources. An example would be the Iceland-britian conflict. As Iceland depends on the fishing industry for survival, its source of revenue comes from the fish caught. In 1970s, the number of fish, especially cod, dropped by 1/3 and these were due to the over fishing of Belgium, german and britian on Iceland seas. Thus, Iceland has came up with measures in controlling the number of fish caught to the UN but most were ignored. As 79% of the total export comprises of fresh fish and fish products, it is important for Iceland to maintain a sustainable levels of fish stocks in the seas around Iceland. Source of economic survivals is threatened, Iceland had to fight to ensure that this source of natural resource is sustained. This conflict resulted in Iceland breaking displomatic ties with britian. When a countryââ¬â¢s scarce resources is being threatened, they have to fight back as it is their main source of revenue and survival. Losing the main source of scarce resource ewould lead to economic downfall, jobs and livelihood at stake resulting in poverty Different values and benefits. Countries fight over different values and benefits due when they feel that it is being threatened by others. This is evident in the Korean war. Korea is being separated into 2 halves in the 38th parallel after the Japanese surrended in the 1945. The Russian occupied the north of parallel and the American occupied the south of parallel. Attempt of un to establish a single government failed as the north parallel did not want to have an election in the north. North korea was then created and became a communist party whereas south korea was then created and became democratic party. Both the government claimed that they both have the rights to rule the Korean peninsula. China, afraid that the north korea would be influenced by the south koreaââ¬â¢s democractic system, helped and supported north korea in the war of north korea and south korea to spread communism. This showed that when countries come into conflict to extend their balue systems to other territories and also protect their value systems from being threatened to fight back

It is divided into six sections that are meant to answer the question. Likely questions that a hospital CEO would ask him or herself include how the Act will be applied to the hospital, what the Act means for his or her hospital and what strategic concerns should be regarded to prosper in the environment resulting from the Act. The Affordable Care Act is composed of resources and plans to manage growth local, federal and the state workforce. The Act offers loans and grants for persons, hospitals, organizations, and schools. It has provisions that allow the redeployment of slots that have not been allocated to anyone. Redeployment of closed hospital slots is aimed at exploiting healthcare resources and prospects in training (Main & Starry, 2010). When the aging workforce is considered with the demand for services in healthcare, especially if the general population is made up of a large number of old persons, then this raises a great concern for hospital CEOââ¬â¢s. Who will take care of this ageing population if the general healthcare workforce in the hospital is ageing? Healthcare professionals and workers above the ages of 55 are regarded as part of an ageing workforce. As the hospital CEO, one will seek to take advantage of the Act and seek the grants that it offers. These grants will then be used by the hospital to sponsor bright needy students undertaking medical courses in institutions around the country. The terms for sponsorship shall include provisions which shall ensure that sponsored students will work for the hospital in return for a period of not less than ten years. This way, the
